About Mavrud
Bulgaria’s winemaking tradition can be traced back to antiquity. Bulgaria has one of the most ancient wine histories in the world. This is the reason why we chose the emblematic authentic Bulgarian grape variety, Mavrud, as our symbol for the day. The emphasis on Mavrud aims to present the style as well as its diversity, quality and modern feel, which can now be observed in many Bulgarian wines, regardless of their variety.
Mavrud Variety
The Mavrud grape is an old indigenous variety that has been grown on the territory of Bulgaria since ancient times. The Mavrud variety is one of the best Bulgarian varieties for high quality red wine production.
History and Legends
Archaeological findings suggest that the area around the modern city of Asenovgrad was a main winemaking region for the Thracians. In Ancient times the Greeks would reach this area through the Maritsa river.
Mavrud Wines
Mavrud is one of the most valuable Bulgarian varieties for dry red wine production. The variety is the most late ripening red variety in the country, a reason why it is strongly influenced by climate conditions.
Pairing with food
Ask any sommelier or winemaker, and they’ll suggest you Mavrud to go with your favorite food, to be shared and paired with flavors and textures, enhancing the whole dining experience.
